LAKELAND | The new University of South Florida Polytechnic campus will be served by a new four-lane entrance road, thanks to federal stimulus money and state transportation funds. Florida Department of Transportation officials awarded a $34.8 million contract to design and build the road to Jacobs Engineering and APAC Southeast on Wednesday. Design of the road will begin immediately and construction will begin by spring, said DOT spokeswoman Cindy Clemmons.

LAKELAND | The Lakeland Economic Development Council accomplished a rare feat Monday: Pulling off a project without Mayor Buddy Fletcher knowing about it. The LEDC surprised the outgoing mayor with an award presentation during its monthly meeting at the Polk Theatre. LEDC Chairman Scott Franklin handed Fletcher a model locomotive symbolizing the mayor's role as the force propelling the city's economic engine during his four terms in office.

WellDyneRX, a mail-order pharmacy and benefit management firm, has selected Lakeland for an expansion that could bring 670 new jobs. The $20 million expansion is the first for Centennial, Colo.-based WellDyne, which will do the bulk of its hiring in 2009 and 2010, with salaries averaging roughly $42,000. The private company is leasing a 66,000-square-foot facility off Swindell Road, near County Line Road, that will serve WellDyne clients nationwide...
