SteriPack, an international company converting medical packaging materials and providing contract manufacturing, contract engineering, and ISO 17025 accredited testing services, has purchased a facility for its first U.S. based operations. The 40,000-sq-ft building sits on five acres in Lakeland, FL, near two international airports and major ports, reports Tony Paolino, president, SteriPack USA. The location positions SteriPack to serve both U.S.-based manufacturers looking to export as well as international firms seeking to serve the U.S. market, Paolino states.

LAKELAND | So who is the national food manufacturer with plans for a big Lakeland expansion in 2012? Irving, Texas-based Mission Foods, according to a local source with knowledge of the deal. Mission Foods, which touts itself as one of the world's largest producers of tortilla products, plans to expand to Lakeland next year and will hire more than 130 people during a period of roughly three years.

LAKELAND | Publix Super Markets Inc. is bringing its Apron's Cooking School concept to Lakeland. Publix plans to open the cooking school at its Lake Miriam Square store sometime in the first half of 2012, said Clayton Hollis, Publix's vice president of public affairs. Hollis spoke at the Lakeland Economic Development Council's annual breakfast meeting Tuesday, where a number of companies made announcements about their projects in Lakeland.

LAKELAND | A New Jersey company plans to build a massive, $40 million gas plant in eastern Lakeland that would be the second biggest user of electricity in the city. The plant, called an air separation facility, would be on 15 acres off North Combee Road near Saddle Creek Road and the Wilson Acres subdivision that the company is buying from the city for $750,000. The company's annual electric bill would be between $3.5 million and $4.5 million.

LAKELAND | An insurance services firm is expanding to Lakeland and could create up to 50 new jobs here. National Flood Services, a Montana-based flood insurance processor, is moving into offices at the Heritage Business Center on Commerce Point Drive. Company officials say they plan to hire 30 to 50 employees for the expansion and will hold an open house today and Wednesday for interested job hunters.

LAKELAND | The city of Lakeland wants to give businesses a break on impact fees to attract new growth and jobs to the area. The Economic Development Impact Fee Mitigation program will cut non-utility impact fees for businesses that build a new facility and pay workers at least $19.18 an hour or an average annual salary of $39,898 - amounting to 115 percent of the average local wage. LAKELAND | The new University of South Florida Polytechnic campus will be served by a new four-lane entrance road, thanks to federal stimulus money and state transportation funds. Florida Department of Transportation officials awarded a $34.8 million contract to design and build the road to Jacobs Engineering and APAC Southeast on Wednesday. Design of the road will begin immediately and construction will begin by spring, said DOT spokeswoman Cindy Clemmons.

The LEDC surprised the outgoing mayor with an award presentation during its monthly meeting at the Polk Theatre.
